Reduce, reuse, recycle are the buzz words of this generation. For us that love vintage this is not a new idea. I got lost in the online catalog of Aurora Mills Architectural Salvage. Only 25 minutes from our fair city, SAM offers a huge variety of items from the spectacular, one-of-a-kind pieces such as bronze elevator doors from New York City to everyday items such as five panel interior doors. Their inventory represents many of the popular architectural eras including California Mission, Arts and Crafts, Victorian, Tudor, Spanish Revival, Queen Ann, Italianate, Eastlake, and Colonial.

Thought I'd share some of the awesome items from their site with you all. Salvage is sweet!

DIY Project: Wallpapered Tea Cart

DIY Project: Upcycled Hallway Console

How they did it:

Buy tables at a yard or garage sale, thrift store, Goodwill, off Craigslist or scavenge from a friend or family member.

1. Removed the drawer handles, lightly sanded all surfaces with sandpaper, and wiped with a damp cloth.

2. Applied one coat of primer and three coats of Benjamin Moore’s high-gloss Bunny Gray paint (2124-50), letting it dry between coats.

3. Painted the tabletops with a chevron pattern (or create your own design) using a stencil created from 1- and 2-in.-wide painter’s tape, applying two coats of high-gloss white paint (2-oz. sample jar).

4. Replaced the handles.

Time: 1 weekend

Cost: $38 for primer and paint

DIY Project: Upcycled Painted Filing Cabinet

Repainting a filing cabinet is a quick and affordable way to bring a fun color into your home office. I found this DIY project online and thought you all might enjoy it.

YOU WILL NEED:

Metal file cabinet(s)

Drop cloth

Screwdriver

Sandpaper

Primer

Rust resistant spray paint

NOTE: Always work outside when painting for proper ventilation!!

1. Remove all hardware first. Pull out all of the drawers so you can spray each one individually and allow them to dry separately.

2. Clean your cabinet of any marks, rust or debris, then sand lightly to give the surface some tooth for the paint to grab onto.

3. Use a spray paint primer (available from any hardware shop or home store). Apply primer from about 12" away, erring on the side of caution by applying even, light coats. Allow to dry overnight.

4. Spray paint in the same manner the primer was applied (work slow and steady to avoid streaks or uneven sections). Allow to dry at least overnight before use.
