DIY: Photo Headboard

Photo Finish
To add color and personal style to your room, create a photo headboard. It's an unexpected way to display your favorite pictures or art prints, and frees your bedside table from space-hogging picture frames.

Instructions:

1. Sand a hollow core door (available at HomeDepot.com); remove dust with tack cloth. Apply a coat of primer to all surfaces; let dry.

2. Apply two or three coats of paint to all surfaces, letting dry after each coat.

3. Measure and mark desired placement of photos. Using tape on the backs of photos, attach them to door where marked.

4. Center a clear acrylic sheet (available at HomeDepot.com) over each photo; screw into place at each corner.

5. Screw large picture hangers to back of headboard, several inches from upper edge near each side. Slip wire through loops, pulling taut. Wrap wire ends around center wire. Trim excess.

6. Attach nail to wall above center of bed; hang headboard on nail. (Be sure the picture hangers, wire and nail are heavy enough to carry the weight of your headboard.)

Interiors: Bedroom Project

What? Bedroom designs, again? Yes, it's true, we're back in our "finish-the-bedroom" mode, folks. I know, I know, what room in this apartment are we not in the process of designing, fixing or finishing? And, really, who am I kidding? Our humble bedroom has never even had a style. The true bane of this place since we moved in. We've made several false starts and changed direction too many times. I'm pretty sure we've got it decided now. (Er, I mean, I'm pretty sure I've got it decided now).

Our start: FINCH bedding set ~ Ty Pennington for Sears
DIY dresser: HEMNES 8-drawer, black-brown ~ Ikea

Chris isn't all that fussy but I know he wouldn't go for those rich brown walls in the top photo. The brocade wallpaper in the last photo wouldn't cut his mustard either. He leans more toward the beach-cottage look of photos 2 and 3 but the rest of the house is going Ikea so as goes the house so goes the bedroom.

The plan is clean lines plus warm, slightly masculine colors: sand, white, black and espresso brown. I will post photos for you as we make our progress. No promises that will be soon but we're working on it. Really.

Design Inspiration: Relaxed Eclectic

These are rooms that I could live in. The gray walls feel hushed and calm to me. The hot pink coffee table--well, yeah, please and thanks! The wall of glass behind that bed in the last photo...ahhhhh. Breathe, and relax.

DIY Project: Mirror Headboard

Arrange small light weight mirrors grid-style for a glamorous regency-style look in the bedroom. I really like this idea for the glam factor and because it would bring extra light into any space.

Design Inspiriation: Guest Room

A few steps away from the main house along a covered exterior walkway, this guest retreat is reminiscent of a boutique hotel room, with luxurious linens and bath products, soothing colors, and soft light. Nature as art, pillows are covered in simple botanical patterns; above the bed, a local artist’s trio of works depicts boulders and sand patterns of nearby Lake Tahoe. I'd be their guest any weekend!

DIY Project: Fabric Headboard

Create a fresh headboard for spring or summer with fun fabric...here's how:

1. Have enough fabric to generously cover the front of your headboard and the back side about 5 inches in. Wrap the fabric over the top edge of headboard and secure with a staple in the center, about three inches in from the edge.

2. On the opposite edge, pull fabric taut and staple to secure. Repeat on remaining two sides, then staple all around the edges, pulling cloth tight. Stop 3 inches from corners.

3. Fold the fabric at one corner into a neat finish by tucking the excess underneath and smoothing the top down. Secure with three or four staples, keeping the folds flat and even. Repeat for each corner.

The striped fabric shown is available at Beach House Style.

Design Inspiration: White & Lime Bedroom

This room could be much too sterile for some but white always conveys simple, soothing and fresh for me. The pop of LIME and the bold, graphic print of the zinnia is the saving grace here and gives it such a contemporary look.

DIY Projects: Kitchen Art, Dresser

Last weekend I switched out the art in my kitchen. I've had this poster, Plaza after the Rain, hanging by my stove for almost six years. I was photographing all my projects from last term's drawing class when inspiration hit. Why not reuse the frame to display MY art in my kitchen?

before (Plaza after the Rain poster, 20" x 30" by Paul Cornoyer)

The after photo is one of my charcoal drawings sans frame. It's now hanging boldly, graphically, and proudly in my kitchen. There are other projects brewing for my kitchen so stay tuned for future improvements.

after (charcoal negative space drawing, 18"x24" by me)

Last weekend I also decided to do something about our bedroom. You might remember a few weeks back I shared a few photos of our home. The kitchen and bedroom pics were so cleverly titled as "snippets"...and with good reason. In six years we have still not settled on a decor plan for our bedroom, and, sadly, it has become both a catch-all room (read: boxes of stuff that need to go to the garage) and the bain of my decorating existence.

The storage (or rather the lack thereof) is far less than efficient. We paid a visit to what I consider a home furnishings nirvana land--Ikea. We selected the grand-daddy 8-drawer HEMNES dresser in the infamous brown-black color. We redeemed a gift card from Christmas.
The plan was in motion.

Carrying it home in our 2-door coupe (same car, different color) was exciting enough, and as you see, I promptly opened the packages and piled up the hardware. I actually like assembling things myself, especially since it saves us money. No, these aren't family heirloom pieces but life is short. I'm thankful for Ikea's marketing savvy as it allows us to change our look as we change our mind!

Of course, right after I unpack all the pieces and the packets of hardware, I get the smack down with this head cold. So my project sits waiting for me to return to the land of the living. Sometimes I just have to hit that pause button...*sigh*

Hope you all have a very relaxing weekend!
